The middle school years are a time of tremendous growth and discovery — academically, socially, and emotionally. At Lawrence Academy, we view these years as a bridge between childhood and young adulthood, helping students develop confidence, independence, and a love of learning in a supportive environment.

Beginning in 6th grade, students transition from a self-contained classroom to changing classes throughout the day. This structure helps them learn organization, time management, and accountability as they move between subjects and experience different teaching styles.

Each day, middle school students follow a six-period schedule that includes four core academic classes — English, History, Math, and Science — along with Physical Education and an elective. This well-rounded approach encourages both intellectual growth and personal exploration.

  • Language Arts - Our Middle School Language Arts program is built around a novel-based curriculum that inspires a genuine love of reading and writing. Students explore a diverse selection of age-appropriate novels that spark discussion, critical thinking, and creativity. Through these stories, they strengthen comprehension, vocabulary, and analytical skills while connecting literature to their own experiences and the world around them. Students explore a variety of writing techniques and apply their learning through essays, creative projects, and class discussions.
  • Math (Grades 6-8) - Math in Focus provides a rigorous, concept-based approach to mathematics. Through hands-on learning, visual models, and real-world problem-solving, students develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and the ability to apply them with accuracy and insight.
  • Algebra I (Grade 8) - Advanced 8th grade students have the opportunity to take Algebra I, a high school–level course that builds a strong foundation in abstract mathematical thinking. Students explore linear equations, inequalities, functions, and polynomials while developing problem-solving and reasoning skills that prepare them for higher-level math courses in high school.
  • Science - Middle School Science at Lawrence Academy invites students to explore the world around them through hands-on experiments and inquiry-based learning. Throughout the middle grades, students study Earth, Life, and Physical Science—investigating topics such as ecosystems, weather patterns, energy, and the properties of matter. Our program encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of how science connects to everyday life.
  • Social Studies - In Middle School Social Studies, students explore the stories, people, and events that have shaped our world. Through the study of World History, U.S. History, and North Carolina History, students develop a deeper understanding of cultures, geography, government, and citizenship. Hands-on projects, discussions, research, and field trips help them connect the past to the present and see their role in shaping the future.
  • Electives - Our Middle School elective program provides students with a well-rounded educational experience that balances academics with creativity and exploration. Electives such as Theater, STEM, Art, Physical Education, Home Economics, and Creative Writing allow students to apply their knowledge in practical and imaginative ways while fostering confidence, teamwork, and innovation.

Beyond the classroom, middle schoolers are encouraged to get involved in athletics and other extracurricular activities. Participation in school sports fosters teamwork, school spirit, and a sense of belonging — all within the caring, family-like community that defines Lawrence Academy.
